Shop till You Drop (Dead)

Shop till you drop – the idiotic mantra of mindless consumption which originated in the west. After living in the US for any extended amount of time, you will often become apathetic to the sheer amount of advertising that is consistently bombarding you for what seems like every single second of every fucking day. Not just the obvious enormous visual onslaught of television advertising but also radio, internet, media print and even mobile platforms as and apps. It is ubiquitous in our environment and like every other mindless consumer that composes much of this complicit society, you not only expect this as the norm but eventually it becomes secondary or even tertiary in relation to life’s additional daily and noisy externalities.

November 2013 turned out to be excruciatingly annoying for the sole reason that the retail giant Kmart, created this most idiotic of commercials which essentially epitomizes the sick fascination mainstream Americana has with rampant materialism.

This penchance for imbecilic behavior is actually exacerbated online, especially in social networks where people share and indulge in the most brainless of cerebral ventures. I decided to to save several in order to properly illustrate this alarming epidemic. The following need no detailed explanation.

Shop Till You Drop

In the book Fast Food Nation, there was a section that detailed the history of McDonald’s, the fast food mega conglomerate. I remember reading that at the upper echelons of corporate marketing, children are considered consumer trainees. The above excerpt from Facebook essentially drives this point home. Notice the equally disturbing comments which openly condone this moronic parenting.

The number of Likes when viewed in comparative fashion, can be easily construed as society exhibiting mental deficiencies en masse, or people in the US just have some seriously fucked up priorities. This also clearly illustrates that for a vast majority of the dimwits who live here, that intelligence levels have been severely impacted as evidenced by the collective obsession with irrelevancy. Even more disturbing is that this social psyche has been ingrained as a definite part of US non-culture, resulting in societies acceptance and preference to shaping oneself as a mental moron is actually preferred and considered normal whereas being intelligent, philosophical, introspective and creatively individualistic is considered weird, strange and oddball-ish. The latter condemning one to an existence of social stratification and isolation.

Once again this adult admiration and obsession with child-like themes and cartoons caricatures is extremely pronounced in America. Hollywood is seemingly swept up in this craze to continually perpetuate feature films that are marketed to a passive indoctrinated society of fluoridated adults who operate mentally and emotionally at a retarded level of critical development.

It is no surprise to a casual visitor or observer of the US, that the vast majority of people seemed to be mindlessly obsessed with organized sports for no apparent reason except it perpetuates conformity, group think and indulges in reinforcing moronic masculine stereotypes – essential for indoctrinating the mass of youth away from more cerebral pursuits which would otherwise establish the basis for a critical thinking rational individual. No one can deny that living in America, organized participatory sports is systematically bombarded by mass media and perpetuated by academia since birth, to enforce the collectivist model, stifle creative originality and dissident thoughts and to promote group consensus social pressure. This is eventually reinforced in various social relationships via professional and personal roles.

The CNN post above serves as evidence of the media’s role in perpetuating this senseless obsession and past time. Considering the state of world affairs as well as the economic malaise in the USA, one would think these 10K+ idiots have something more pressing to attend to in regards to priorities.

The zombie is basically symbolic of the average American. Instead of consuming the flesh of the living, the American will consume with equal veracity the garbage exports from China. He will do this even at the expense of his fellow compatriot’s livelihood. It is no wonder one of the most popular shows and themes is based around the zombie and the apocalyptic end of modern civilization. Once again, the popularity of social networks has provided the evidence to support my claim. 354,363 zombies can not be wrong!

George Romero’s classic Dawn of The Dead was a prolific look at this zombie apocalypse in America. The following scene from the movie was symbolic but also a foreshadow of things to come – it was a social commentary on the future of the American collective psyche. Unfortunately that was 1978 and today is 2013. Thirty five years later and that premonition has become a stark reality.

I received the following email advertisement from computer company, Lenovo regarding an upcoming promotion. Consider this as evidential testimony to Romero’s prolific social commentary regarding the future of the American consumer. A Zombie indeed. Who needs a functioning brain when you can simply shop till you drop.
